Three Heads

I recently had the opportunity to be on the other side of the lens, with Kersten Luts at the helm. Kersten is an incredible commercial and portrait photographer, and co-host of The Camera Shake Podcast. Kersten was great fun to work with and I’m chuffed with the results. It’s not often I get to model, aside from to an outstretched arm when taking a selfie!

Kerten had asked me to get involved with a project he;s working on entitled Three Heads In A Row

Kersten gave me some pretty straight-forward instructions. The whole point was to take three shots of each person with props that were relevant, so I was asked to bring three props with me for the shoot. Naturally I chose a camera, coffee, and maps.

We spent ages catching up at the start, talking about the ins and outs of the industry right now and of course the implications of COVID. There’s been far too much to moan about and it was great to thrown the negativity aside and look to the future (which hopefully looks a bit like the past!)

We soon got to the set-up and got some test shots in the bag, like this little beauty where I have absolutely nailed the trout-pout.

After this things started to get real. The props came out, along with a lot of over-dramatised expressions and silent screams. The three props were fiddled with and three heads resulted, which Kristen absolutely smashed out of the park. Take a look at these: -

It was great fun to be part of this project and I’m excited to see who else gets involved! It’s all about expression and tomfoolery, and it’s a great thing to do on the other side of lockdown!

While I had Kersten’s attention I asked him something a little cheeky. I asked him to shoot something I’d kinda wanted for a long time - a cold themed portrait. I had all kinds of loose ideas and I even had some prop ideas. I pitched up with a bag of fake snow that was initially sprinkled onto me, but eventually hurled straight into my face, and I even created some icicles using hot glue

The whole set was changed out and the light was totally different for a moody style of shot. I was wrapped up for an arctic adventure, but in reality I was sweating my things off.

After this BTS shot things were mixed up once more and Kersten absolutely nailed it with this piece of magic: -

I had a great time in Kersten’s company and I’ll be back with him soon, along with Nick Kirby, for a van-based podcast. I can’t wait!

If you didn’t catch me on the Camera Shake Podcast the first time around, here it is :)
